Section 1 Rooseville Montana to Polaris MT - D3

06/12 Day 3, Fernie, Elko, Grasmere, Roosville/Canada-US Montana border,
Eureka, Fortine, Dickey Lake (91 Miles, ~14 hours)

First new map!
Just before the border crossing the alternate route re-joined the main GDMBR route, next stop Eureka, Montana.  I liked the sound of it.  It sounded like progress.
Then STB started having terrible flat troubles.  3 Flats by Eureka – the last repair was not holding air very well.

We were lucky to get the last seats at the Jax cafĂ© before they locked the doors.  We chatted with a group of women who looked like the Indigo Girls.  They helped me with some phone research.  Stupid, stupid ATT go-phone will not work though their ATT phones do.  It turns out there is really no ATT in Montana.  Their phones were able to service hop onto another carrier.  A feature not available on the pay as you go phone.  Grrrr.

After lunch in Eureka, we took another race alternate.  The route over the Whitefish Divide that skirted closest to Glacer National Park was closed because of snow.  We would continue south to Fortine.

We stopped about every hour or so to pump up STB’s tire and ended up re-grouping with the 4 others after Fortine (where STB succumbed to frustration and bought a beer to have later).

The group traveled together to Dickey Lake where we decided to squat at the closed Dickey Lake Bible Camp.  We all soaked our legs in the super cold lake water.  The 4 others slept at the water’s edge but there were so many mosquitoes!  STB and I slept on the large covered porch of the main camp building.  This was my first time to use my bivy.  Note:  I needed longer line from the head to keep it off my face.

Phone still does not work.

STB worked on her tire, changing the bad one from the rear to the front for easier access and to take weight off of it. And of course, drank her beer.

Our camp/trail magic – There were bathrooms but locked.  STB found an open cabin while randomly looking about.  Keys to the bathrooms were on the wall J

Our bad juju – we did not tell the others.
