Eureka, Fortine,
From Fernie we headed south on dirt to Elko. We’d wanted to get ahead of Reinhold
(German), Will Snow (Scot), and the South Africans. We should have started earlier.
We managed
to get lost on a maze of dirt roads about 30 min. out of town. We chased the same poor group of cows off the
road at least 3 times. I had to get over
that fear of cows in a hurry. Yes I
know. I am from Texas and should not be scared of cows. What ever.
The boys
caught up and ended up as turned around as we were. Note: Reinhold was a terrible climber back in
the beginning. He got better ;)
Finally, we
found our route and got underway. Of
note, a long dirt climb in the morning. Much
of the route to the border after Elko was paved but hilly. Lake Koocanusa would stretch out to our right for
the next 20 to 25 miles to the border.
It was fun
to be in line at the border crossing on a bike.
Being there was for me the first really big milestone. It also meant completing the first map and
staring map 2 of 7. The border guards
checked our passports but were generally dis-interested. It was not like we were the first cyclists to
cross. How far to Pie Town ?
